Australia moves to two dose nine valent HPV vaccine in 2018

Wednesday, 14 February 2018
In 2018 the nine valent HPV vaccine (trade name Gardasil 9) has replaced the quadrivalent HPV vaccine (trade name Gardasil) in the National Immunisation Program.  The vaccine now covers 9 types of the HPV virus instead of 4.  The extra 5 types it protects against are cancer causing HPV types.
The vaccine is now given routinely in two doses to girls and boys in high school at age 12-13years, with catch up vaccination up to the age of 19 also now available through GPs and immunisation services.  Those who are aged 15 years or older at the time of first dose still require three doses of vaccine for full protection.   Click here for more information
